The Machon programme is an option for a limited number of participants to take a separate Jerusalem studies programme. Participants join with all other Year Course chanichim for the Israel Experience and Community Volunteering sections of Year Course and participants should refer to these to understand these aspects of their year.
During the Jerusalem studies, participants join the Machon study section - a challenging leadership programme, taking place in a dynamic, pluralist, inter-movement environment, together with Israelis. Chanichim learn through informal high- level learning, emphasising Israel's land, culture, people and leaders.
MACHON – BE THE NEXT LEADER
History and Info :
Machon (in full the 'Institute for Youth Leaders from Abroad) first ran as long ago as 1946, before the state was even created, and since then has trained over 12,500 people who have graduated as Bogrei Machon and have in many cases gone on to become leaders of the Jewish world, both in Israel and the Diaspora. Participants on the Machon will follow on in this proud tradition.
Machon offers...
... Leadership
Machon believes in the importance of developing Jewish leadership around the world. Machonikim go back to their communities and take active leadership roles as madrichim in FZY, as activists in the Jewish student world and, later on, as leaders within the wider British Jewish community. As part of this process there is an extensive hadracha course, many opportunities for running things for peers and the opportunity to meet and make contact with various leaders from within Israeli society and to learn form them what leadership is all about.
... An Open Pluralist Environment
Machon believes that Jewish leaders and educators need to be exposed to an open approach to education that challenges their existing beliefs and ideas and that seeks to have them learn from, and together with, a range of other Jews who share different views and ideologies to themselves in a tolerant and accepting atmosphere. On Machon there are leaders from around the Jewish world (both youth movements and others) from a wide range of beliefs and ideologies, including a group of Israelis of the same age who are a full part of the programme and all its activities.
... Personal Journey
Machon believes that our unique programme offers a fantastic opportunity for a personal journey that will allow self development in a unique way, whether that be educational, social, spiritual or development as a leader. In order to do this the Machon has a broad range of options to choose from within its learning opportunities as well as the space to develop a participants’ own interests, together with the one on one support from a variety of experts within their field.
... Content Driven
Machon believes that in order to be a good leader and madrich/a in a Zionist youth movement, (as well as for its own value) that Machonikim should have a basic understanding in key content areas related to Jewish life and the place of Israel. In order to do this Machon brings in top lecturers, educators and leaders to deliver content related to 5 keys areas: Judaism; Israel & Zionism, Hadracha, Ivrit and the Story of the Jewish People. We use a wide range of methods including informal programmes, text study, lectures and outdoor experiences and within these areas you can choose from which methodology helps you learn best. There are also a large number of choices from courses as diverse as, for example, 'Jewish Identity through Art', Self-Understanding through the Israel-Arab conflict'; 'Chasidut' and 'Judaism as Portrayed in Films' to name just a few.
How Machon Works:
To see a standard weekly tochnit (programme) that runs for most of the 16 weeks of the Machon programme click here. The other weeks are made up of three tiyulim (3-5 day trips to see different parts of the country), special seminars and a closing Sikum week run by the Machonikim themselves.
