During Community Volunteering, participants are immersed in community life. Participants live in apartments in Bat Yam, and volunteer in various settings to aid those who are in need of social resources. They become familiar residents of the neighbourhood, organising and participating in community activities and shopping in the local markets. Participants receive a stipend for their food and share responsibility for shopping and cooking meals with their roommates.
Volunteering . . .
Weeks are spent doing volunteer work in one of a variety of settings, including kindergartens, schools, hospitals, after school programmes, senior citizen homes, soup kitchens, or working with the disabled. Shalem volunteers become an integral part of the life of the neighbourhood, serving as tutors and big brothers/sisters, and using their talents to lead chugim (clubs or interest groups) in sports, art, music, etc.
. . . and Learning
Shiurim are given three times during the week by members of the Shalem faculty and local teachers. Participants also receive assistance in setting up additional Torah learning b'chevruta or on an individual basis, including the possibility of chevrutot with the madrichim or the Rosh Tochnit. Additionally, chanichim study in a Hebrew Ulpan for six hours a week -- a wonderful compliment to living and working in Hebrew speaking environments in Bat Yam.
Participants will also have informal educational activities like weekly siyurim (field trips) in and around the region, as well as special group activities and events.
