The study programme consists of Torah studies (Gemara, Tanakh, Halacha, and jewish Philosophy) and advanced Judaic studies (Hebrew Ulpan, Jewish History, and Zionist Thought).
Classes in Jerusalem are sectioned in the various subjects according to the backgrounds of the students. Limudei Kodesh are conducted under the supervision of HaRav Dr. Yehuda Jayson, the Rosh Tochnit, while Hebrew and Israel studies are in the framework of the general FZY Year Course study programem. All classes are coeducational. Small class sizes allow for active student participation and significant interaction between students and instructors.
The programme is designed to nurture a love of Limmud Torah and to foster the skills necessary for independent study. The studies are serious, and full participation is required. The Beit Midrash and accompanying library have been designed to enable each student to fulfill his or her own potential. Within the warm, vibrant atmosphere of learning is openness to a wide range of opinions and views, an abiding respect for tradition, and an uncompromising adherence to halakha.
For Shalem, as in all FZY Year Course tracks, Hebrew study is a top priority as the critical tool both in Torah studies and in understanding contemporary Israeli society. Ulpan classes are offered at a number of levels according to participants' needs and abilities.
The numerous field trips during the Jerusalem Studies component are seen as an integral part of our understanding of Torah im derech eretz. These day trips throughout Israel allow our country to serve as a living classroom.
