Shalem Volunteer Options:

  • Elementary or High School – Working with either 1st to 6th graders or 7th to 12th graders, you will be assigned to the English teacher, tutoring and connecting one-on-one with the students, with small groups, or helping to run the English class. Work will include being involved in different school's activities, organizing events (for holidays, etc.), and making the school life nicer and richer for the kids and staff. We often have the chanichim organize a special activity once a week or speak about a specific topic (about the US, life back at home, etc.) with the students in the school.

  • Elderly Day Center - You will join the professional staff in their daily routine, which features different chugim of computers, activity room with board games, lunch, arts and crafts, exercise, etc. Work varies from one-on-one to a group setting. This option allows you to improve the quality of life of these people that have a lot to offer in return.

  • Soup Kitchen - Working at the soup kitchen is a pleasure. You will be preparing food that is distributed to children in the Schools of Bat Yam. As a bonus you receive lunch and are able to use the Internet in your free time while you are there. On Fridays, the organizer of the soup kitchen runs a cooking class in the mornings that you are able to participate, learn how to cook, and then impress us all with your new recipes.

  • Library - Work at the library includes helping students with English homework, organizing books on the shelves, and creating a storytelling time once or twice a week for the young kids to attend.

  • Moadonit/Community Center - The age of the children that attend the Moadonit ranges from 4-12; in the community center, the range is from 13-18. Your role as a volunteer there is to help the madrichot (staff) that work at the community centers with the children, and planning activities for the children while you are there.

  • Soccer School - The work at the soccer school includes teaching basic English to the kids that come for about an hour, and helping them with homework. Afterwards you will be able to play soccer with them and help the coaches with practice.

  • Akim - (Working with people who have developmental disabilities) Work at Akim is to interact, play, and talk with the people that work at Akim. You will find the people here to be very sweet and lovable, and the work to be extremely rewarding.

  • Storytelling – You will perform a play of children’s stories or a music concert. One week will be used for rehearsals and the following week will be performing. The plays will take place in the different community centers around the city in front of the children.
