Shevet is a new, different and innovative programme for FZY Year Course and the British Jewish Community.
Shevet aims to provide a strong framework for chanichim to explore their Jewish observance in a group setting. Shevet is for those chanichim who want to increase their Jewish observance during their year in Israel, but are not yet ready to commit to total Orthodox observance.
Shevet is just like all other Year Course tracks, with three sections; Jerusalem Studies, Israel Experience and Community Volunteering. Chanichim should refer to the main Year Course brochure for information about these elements. However there are some differences.
Shevet Jerusalem studies
Shevet chanichim will begin with Jerusalem study section as laid out in the brochure. Chanichim will take the core courses outlined, however in addition the following courses will be offered and will be taught by Orthodox teachers.
Taamei mitzvot
This course will examine your relationship with God and the practical ramifications for that. One highlight of the course is the “Mitzva of the Week” programme. Each week the chanichim will learn about a different mitzvah from a modern Orthodox perspective, and will actually practice that mitzvah for the week. The group will discuss how it was to practice that mitzvah and it’s relevance to their personal lives today.
Jewish Thought and Culture Elective
Chanichim will be able to choose between different philosophical and practical (halacha) classes and thus deepen their level of understanding, whether they be beginners or advanced.
Jewish Text Elective
Jewish literacy and Textual understanding are critical elements of Shevet and will be a key element of these classes.
Unique Jewish experiences
Each week during the Jerusalem and Community Volunteering sections, Shevet will have a special Jewish and Israeli experience, be that a meeting with a personality, a trip or an exciting activity.
Shabbat:
Shabbat is an essential part of the week, and once a month we will be holding Shabbatonim that will visit and experience unique Shabbat atmospheres across Israel.
Kotel:
On a regular basis, chanichim will get an opportunity to daven at the Kotel.
Shevet Religious ploicies
Chanichim are expected to keep kosher, observe Shabbat, and follow a dress code. These guidelines will be laid out but will not be enforced. Shevet aims to encourage Jewish Observance but not enforce it, members of staff will be available to talk to chanichim about options and the importance of an observant lifestyle. Boys will be expected to wear kippot (especially during meals and classes) and all will be expected to dress modestly.
Shevet is endorsed by Tribe.
