Overall Programme and Goals
- To expand artistic technical knowledge in various methods and materials.
- To volunteer in the field of arts and bring the joy of art to parts of the community that feel it is beyond them.
- To understand the level of commitment and way of life of a professional artist.
- To learn about Israel as a young and vibrant Visual art scene.
- To become familiarised with artists, works and aspects of Israeil and Jewish contemporary art.
The Year Course Visual Arts (YCVA) is an addition to the traditional Year Course programme, offering Community Volunteering, Jerusalem Studies, and the Israeli Experience sections. Each component features extended opportunities for volunteering, learning, and cultural enrichment.
YC Visual arts offers an enriching educational programme to help develop the artist with in during the year in Israel. Chanichim will take classes that will enhance technical knowledge in sketching and sculpting as well as meeting young and upcoming Israeli artists such as, Miriam Kavesa and Yigal Tomarkin. The programme will visit museums, art galleries and art schools that have become the greenhouse of the new artist’s generation in Israel.
Chanichim will discover the charm of Digital Art as they explore new fields of visual arts and help to bring people closer to the experience of arts, through volunteer work with the community.
Prior experience with visual Arts is needed in order to be a chanich/a in this programme: Chanichim applying for Art college or those who have studied Art at A level or with a rich history of painting, drawing, sketching or sculpting will be appropriate for this programme. For chanichim that are willing to work hard and want to challenge themselves whilst developing artistic skills – this is the programme for you!
No special Hebrew level is required.
Community Volunteering (September – November)
Living in Holon Community Volunteering (CV) chanichim will go through the regular CV programme: Chanichim can choose to volunteer with other Year Coursers on the regular CV programme, although there will be some placements only available to YCVA. volunteering with the Israeli centre of digital art, where chanichim will be updating the online art archive and helping to set up the exhibits, or the centre of puppet theatre where chanichim will create, build and decorate huge puppets to be part of the Holon traditional Adloyada Purim parade.
Once a week, the whole group will do a volunteer project with and for the community in the field of Visual Arts. Chanichim can suggest and choose a project that will educate and impact the community they live in and that would leave a long lasting mark.
Once a week you will have a workshop class, where chanichim will be able to create with the guidance of professional teachers:
- Painting - Through observation of still-life and the figure, chanichim will be introduced to the use of oil or acrylic paint, develop colour mixing techniques emphasising varied approaches to the use of paint.
- Sculpture - Principles of sculpture and relief through the figure and other references using Clay and plastacine.
- Drawing - Drawing in black and white: Line, volume, composition, and perspective are taught through observation of still-life and interiors.

Jerusalem Studies (December – February)
The Jerusalem studies section will be the same section as referred to in the Year Course brochure. However all chanichim will have to take the Jewish Art History course.
In addition to the regular courses, there will be informal education opportunities for the Visual Arts track chanichim via a weekly group meeting/tour to special places:
- Visiting Hadassah College and taking part in the Print and Graphic design workshop that can enhance knowledge and artistic technique.
- A visit to the Bezalel Academy of fine Arts, to participate in a glass Design class.
- Meeting artists and learning from them in person about their craft: ceramics, print, photography and other exiting fields.
- Visiting Israel’s leading Galleries and Museums, viewing contemporary Israeli art.
Israel Experience (March – May)
The Israel Experience portion of the programme will be the same as for the rest of YC: all options are open for chanichim to choose from – whether it is MADA or Marva, Kibbutz or a youth Village, the Year Course staff will encourage chanichim to keep on creating in their free time. Chanichim will be able, however, to choose to volunteer in their field of expertise: creating and teaching Art Chugim (afternoon activities) for children or volunteering in the Tel Aviv museum of Art, cataloguing pictures and helping with guided tours.
Regardless of IE placement and where chanichim will live for the last component of the year, they will be working on the final project, that will be exhibit in an Art gallery. As part of the YC Sikkum process, the exhibition’s grand opening will get media coverage and be opened to the public.
