The centerpiece of FZY’s Year Course programme is Year Course Classic. Running for 30 years, Year Course Classic gives chanichim an all encompassing rounded understating on the issues facing Israel, Judaism and the Jewish Community today. Combining Jerusalem Studies, Community Volunteering, Israel Experience and an Army Option, Year Course classic is the quality programme that we have been offering since 1978.
THE YEAR ITSELF
How the Year Works
Year Course is a professionally run, exciting and challenging full-time programme, which is designed to give chanichim an in-depth understanding of the complexities that make up modern Israel. The year is made up of three semesters, each lasting three-months, focusing on a different aspect of Israeli life. Everyone will participate in a formal study section in Jerusalem that is at a similar level to Higher Education institutions in Britain, a volunteer component, and an experiential section whereby the participants will be immersed within an area of Israeli society.
All of the Year Course participants will be with American chanichim from Young Judaea, and members of the Israeli Scouts (Tzofim), as well as people from all over Britain from FZY.
The Main Elements of Year Course
Year Course contains a number of major components. The following is a brief outline of each of these elements; click the links for more detailed information.
Jerusalem Studies - Throughout the Jerusalem Study section, participants will grapple with issues which are relevant to young British Jewish Zionists today. All Jerusalem studies are augmented by educational seminars and day trips in and around Jerusalem.
Note: The Jerusalem studies are high level, serious and intense and participants should bare this in mind when applying for FZY Year Course.
Community Volunteering - FZY Year Course chanichim live and volunteer their time in Holon or Bat Yam. They volunteer most mornings and afternoons mostly teaching English in schools to children aged between 5 – 17 years. This is an opportunity for chanichim to live independently, shopping and cleaning for themselves.
Israel Experience - Israel Experience is a unique element to FZY Year Course. The emphasis here is on individual option and choice. Year Course provides over 40 different options every year for chanichim to choose from, these have included volunteering in a safari park, working in an orphanage, and volunteering with Magen David Adom or the Fire Service!
Army Experience - To fully understand Israeli society, FZY believes that it is essential that every participant has a significant interaction with the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). At no point are FZY chanichim members of the IDF or liable for any service of any description, rather they are volunteering and experiencing the life of a soldier of their own age.
